Welcoming the first direct flight service between China and Darwin was a special red-letter day for the Northern Territory.
It was an amazing experience to be involved in the preparations of celebrating this auspicious moment in time. The welcome event for Shenzhen’s Donghai Airlines went well beyond red carpet, extending to the creation of a symbolic campaign device, front pages of the NT News, an array of colourful welcome banners – even a commemorative Australia Post stamp were just a few of the vibrantly themed materials.

There was a touch of charming serendipity behind our inspiration in creating the campaign emblem for the Donghai Airways inaugural flight service between Shenzhen and Darwin. Both entities, the airline and Northern Territory, are represented with iconic bird symbols. We melded Donghai’s nine-coloured seagull, which represents courage, wisdom and tenacity with The Northern Territory’s brolga, an enduring emblem of Territory tourism. Further uniting them together and underpinning the campaign message was our strapline ‘A fusion of new horizons’.

The last time we designed a souvenir front page wrap for the daily newspaper it was lauding the turn of the first sod during the construction of the Adelaide to Darwin railway in 2001. This time, not only did we emblazon the paper in the campaign livery, a tactile translucent wrap was also added to the mix creating further visual interest.

After the Donghai Airlines launch event, our next task was to conjure up some creative to entice our locals to visit Shenzhen. It’s a destination with loads to see and do (even more than shopping and eating!) and Hong Kong is only a short hop away. A major attraction in Shenzhen is the 48-hectare Window of the World theme park that has replicated over 130 iconic global attractions, which we used to piggyback and frame our message.
