The Top End is famous for its host of ‘old salts’ – from those early pioneers who travelled the high seas to settle here, our earliest trading partners the Macassans who sailed over the Timor Sea to fish for trepang, introduced us to tamarind. Darwin’s traditional owners, the Larrakia are known as Saltwater People and our most iconic crocodiles are also known as salties.
