Pairing the logical, analytical left-brain with the creative imagination of the right-brain is essentially what drives the global STEAM movement.

Last year Darwin Middle School embraced this revolution, adding Arts to their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects, equipping students to think more laterally.

History is full of remarkable innovators such as the visionary brilliance of Steve Jobs, who literally changed the face of computer technology by daring to think differently.

Instagram post 18083804914032485 Thinking outside of the square, we worked closely with Darwin Middle School to create a unique suite of iconology elements to communicate all elements of their new STEAM direction. When these elements are composited together, they form an image of the Holistic Student, further becoming a series of whimsical mascots that share messages of their learning journey.

Instagram post 17906434195326704 n 2007 we created the Darwin Middle School brand, designed to complement the natural surrounds of the cliffs and seaviews at Darwin’s Bullocky Point.
Our inspiration behind the symbol came from the intriguing, circular shaped shell of the many ammonite fossils seen around the shoreline beneath the cliffs.
The brand materials visually express the positioning of the School’s environmental values, by incorporating other natural themed elements such as driftwood, sand, shells and water harmonised with an earthy colour palette. The consistent use of the brand guidelines over the past 12 years has successfully differentiated the School from others, achieving the end goal of community recognition.

Instagram post 18083084605059993 Darwin Middle School’s STEAM mascots reflect Darwin’s diverse, multi-cultural community as well as championing the STEAM curriculum that brings academia and creative abilities together. There are hundreds of ‘fun facts’ to draw inspiration from, such as who knew the brilliant mind of astronomer, physicist and engineer Galileo also wrote eloquent poetry, and Albert Einstein had an enduring passion for music, playing the violin and piano.
